AÂ semantic web interface to Wikipedia, named dbpedia http://dbpedia.org/About, provides conceptual access to information. For example, you can take a look at the beginnings of a Military Conflict query
 http://dbpedia.neofonie.de/browse/rdf-type:Military%20Conflict/
or Disease query
 http://dbpedia.neofonie.de/browse/rdf-type:Disease/

I have thought about how we might want to use Semantic Web tools to capture information that could then be used in modeling, but it had not occured to me to use Wikipedia as part of the community involvement mechanisim for capture and refinement of the data.

It sounds like it has the prospect of automating or semi-automating the task of extracting data from text but I am unfamiliar with the idea. Where can I find out about semantic webs?

For starters, look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic_Web#Purpose
The official site is http://www.w3.org/standards/semanticweb/ and http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/
A FAQ is at http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/SW-FAQ
Of course there is always entering “Semantic Web” on a Google search.
